Riesling: The Noble White Grape Full of Freshness and Character

Jun 29, 2026

Few white grapes are as distinctive as Riesling. Known for its vibrant acidity, expressive aromas and incredible ageing potential, Riesling can produce wines that are dry, off-dry, sweet, light, powerful, youthful or beautifully aged.

Origin of Riesling

Riesling originated in Germany, with records dating back to 1435 in the Rheingau region. It became famous along the Rhine River, where cool climates helped preserve its natural acidity and aromatic purity.

Today, Germany remains the spiritual home of Riesling, but the grape is now grown successfully in countries such as France, Australia, Austria, New Zealand and the United States.

Aromas and Flavours

Young Riesling is usually fresh, bright and aromatic, with notes of lime, lemon, green apple, pear, white peach, apricot, jasmine, white flowers and wet stone or slate.

As Riesling ages, it can develop deeper aromas of honey, beeswax, toast, dried apricot and marmalade. Some aged examples also show a subtle petrol-like character, which is considered a classic sign of mature Riesling.

Is Riesling Always Sweet?

No. This is one of the biggest myths about Riesling.

Riesling can be made in many styles: dry, crisp and citrus-driven; off-dry, slightly sweet but balanced by high acidity; sweet, rich and intense; or dessert style, complex, concentrated and long-lived.

Its natural acidity keeps every style refreshing and balanced.

Riesling Around the World

Today, Riesling is grown in many of the world's leading cool-climate wine regions, with each country bringing its own distinctive style.

Germany is the birthplace of Riesling and produces the widest range of styles, from bone dry to lusciously sweet. Expect flavours of lime, green apple, white flowers and slate-like minerality.

France, especially Alsace, is renowned for predominantly dry, fuller-bodied Rieslings with citrus, peach, white flowers, spice and a rich mineral finish.

Austria crafts elegant, dry Rieslings with concentrated stone fruit, lively acidity and pronounced minerality.

New Zealand produces fresh, aromatic Rieslings in both dry and off-dry styles, showcasing lime, citrus blossom and tropical fruit.

The United States, particularly Washington State and New York's Finger Lakes, creates expressive Rieslings ranging from dry to sweet, with bright fruit and excellent balance.

Despite these regional differences, all great Rieslings share remarkable freshness, expressive aromatics and exceptional ageing potential.

Riesling in Australia

Australia has become one of the world's leading producers of premium dry Riesling. Thanks to its cool-climate vineyards, Australian Rieslings are known for their purity, vibrant citrus flavours and remarkable longevity.

The country's most important Riesling regions include Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Great Southern and Tasmania.

Clare Valley, in South Australia, is Australia's benchmark Riesling region, famous for intense lime, citrus, minerality and exceptional ageing potential.

Eden Valley, also in South Australia, produces elegant, floral and refined Rieslings with lemon blossom, green apple and delicate mineral notes.

Great Southern, in Western Australia, is a cool-climate region known for fresh lime, grapefruit, white flowers and crisp natural acidity.

Tasmania creates vibrant, finely structured Rieslings with exceptional freshness and purity.

Riesling is one of Australia's most respected white grape varieties and consistently ranks as the third most consumed white wine, behind Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Its crisp, food-friendly style and outstanding ageing ability continue to make it a favourite among Australian wine lovers.

Food Pairing

Riesling is one of the most versatile wines for food. It pairs beautifully with seafood, oysters, prawns, sushi, Thai cuisine, Vietnamese food, Indian curries, pork, roast chicken, soft cheeses and even blue cheese in sweeter styles.

Final Thoughts

Riesling is a grape of elegance, freshness and personality. From Germany to Alsace and Australia, it tells the story of its climate and region with remarkable clarity.

Whether dry, off-dry or sweet, Riesling remains one of the world's greatest white grape varieties: aromatic, refreshing, age-worthy and always full of life.
